In the pilot episode, "The Guardian", the Voyager is on a mission to locate a missing ship piloted by guerrillas, while the Vulcan Lt. Tuvok, Voyager infiltration security officer, infiltrated the jungle and is on that ship. Voyager Captain Kathryn Janeway brings Tom Paris, a former Starfleet officer who became a Maquis, out of jail to help find the boat. Travel between the dangerous Badlands to discover the Maquis ship, but a former foreign minister known as the Guardian has two boats in the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light years away from the house of the Voyager in the Alpha Quadrant. In the process, several members of Voyager's crew died, including the first officer, helmsman, chief engineer and chief medical officer and all medical personnel. Due to travel on a short mission first, no counselor was assigned to the ship, which Janeway's comments might have been helpful throughout the trip home.
